FOX to Produce a US Version of Torchwood

<![CDATA[jack_usaThe Hollywood Reporter is reporting that FOX is developing a new version of Torchwood for air in the US, written by Russell T Davies and produced by Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter at BBC Worldwide. Read the full story here, and here for Den of Geek’s (whose charming picture we’ve borrowed for this article) take on affairs.

This can’t be seen as too much of surprise, given how many of the key cogs behind Torchwood’s creation, namely Davies, Gardner, and Tranter, are all working in the US now. The new series will probably star John Barrowman as Captain Jack, and, given how many story threads of the Cardiff-based Torchwood team were closed in the thrilling “Children of Earth”, it gives this new Torchwood a blank slate to work off of. The question is, will prudish, mainstream American TV be ready for the pansexual Captain Jack? This is also a man who killed his own grandchild to save mankind in a scene that would have never passed the censors at FOX.

We at Radio Free Skaro find this development interesting, to say the least (and one of our number, Steven, was one of many people who hypothesized that a future Torchwood series might be set in the US). Stay tuned!]]>

SPACE Blog Post – Why Matt Smith as The Doctor is a Very Good Thing

<![CDATA[spacebadgeSo who is this Matt Smith guy, anyway? It’s a fair question. Fandom let out a resounding “huh?” when the new Doctor was announced a little over a year ago. Not only did the then-26 year old Smith go against incoming Doctor Who producer Steven Moffat’s oft-quoted claim that he was looking for an older actor to take on he role, but Smith himself was something of an unknown quantity.

Radio Free Skaro #176 – Click here to listen

rfs176One mini-break in the wilderness is over for Doctor Who and it’s time to look at the gap year that was as we head into the next wilderness mini-break, awaiting Matt Smith’s first series. To aid in the retrospective the Three Who Rule dragged Tachyon TV’s own Neil Perryman kicking and screaming into the (virtual) recording booth, Vinvocci style. More bile was flung about than a monkey can fling poop, though kudos were given where appropriate… but do we ever want to see a gap year again?

SPACE Blog Post – David Tennant is this Generation’s Tom Baker

spacebadgeThat may seem like a bold statement until you take a step back and look at Doctor Who’s storied history in a larger context. When Tom Baker took the role in 1974, he was something of an unknown quantity, a tall and gangly question mark poised to fill the shoes of Jon Pertwee, the “man of action” Doctor who ably rang the show into the Seventies. Likewise, Tennant took over for the broody and intense Christopher Eccleston, who ably shepherded the show back into existence in 2005.

And once Tennant had the role he ran with it. It didn’t hurt that Tennant grew up as a massive fan of the classic series, able to drop the most obscure references to Mandrels and Sensorites at the drop of a hat.

<![CDATA[05/10/2009 08:49Previous investigations by the Radio Free Skaro crew into the names of Series 5/1/31 writers yielded a nearly perfect list now confirmed in Doctor Who Magazine Issue 417. In no particular order, here are the Series 5/1/31 writers:

Steven Moffat (6 episodes)
Chris Chibnall (2 episodes)
Mark Gatiss (1 episode)
Toby Whithouse (1 episode)
Gareth Roberts (1 episode)
Simon Nye (1 episode)

Doctor Who – The End of Time & The Specials Box Set Region 1 Art

<![CDATA[

Artwork for the Region 1 releases of the gap year specials has been released.

On February 2, we will see a standalone release of The Waters of Mars, a standalone release of The End of Time and a box set containing all the gap year specials, including the previously-released The Next Doctor and Planet of the Dead. All releases will be available on both DVD and Blu-Ray (except The Next Doctor which was not shot in HD and will be unavailable on Blu-Ray).

The US packaging carries an “As Seen on BBC America” notation; we can but assume the Canadian packaging will carry an “As Seen on SPACE” notation.

Edit: Per Steve Manfred, The Next Doctor will be upconverted to 1080i and be on Blu-Ray as part of The Specials Box Set.
