SPACE Blog – The Great Erasing of Early Doctor Who

<![CDATA[Today’s Doctor Who fan has always-on, ever-present access to not only the newest iteration of their favorite show but all the spin-offs, supplemental features, fan films and other esoterica related to their favorite program. They probably don’t realize how different their situation is from the early Sixties, when one’s Doctor Who fix consisted solely of a once-a-week viewing. If you missed it, you never saw it again. And in the case of many stories from that decade, that was quite literally what happened.

rfs171With the Three Who Rule reunited once more, and with the analytic powers of the Third Guy squarely aimed at schedules, Appreciation Indexes and other such numeric minutiae, a slow news week was transformed into quasi-random babble and buildup to the exciting segment you’ve all been waiting for….Douglas Camfield in the Miniscope. Praise for Camfield’s prodigious output was universal if varying in intensity, but all three hosts agreed the man was a force for good (for the show) and bad (for Dudley Simpson’s career.)

Doctor Who: The End of Time Broadcasts Confirmed!

<![CDATA[rfs_space_badgeToday the BBC Press Office officially confirmed transmission dates and times for The End of Time Part One and The End of Time Part Two. The UK will see The End of Time Part One at 6:00 PM GMT on Friday, 25 December whilst Part Two will go out on Friday, 1 January from 6:40 PM GMT. Speculation has been rife of late and it’s always at least a bit wonderful to see nobody had guessed correctly.

On the other side of the pond, SPACE has today released when Canada will see Tennant’s finale. While The Waters of Mars will be seen at the same time on SPACE and BBC America, Canadians will have to wait a whole extra week to see The End of Time Part One. SPACE will be running a Doctor Who-themed marathon on Saturday, January 2 featuring a double run of Torchwood: Children of Earth followed by the Doctor Who gap year specials in order. The End of Time Part One will finally air at 8:00 PM EST in an 80-minute slot while Part Two will follow immediately after at 9:20 PM EST in a 100-minute slot. (SPACE is a commercial network and therefore has to allow time for advertising.)

For those in Canada or otherwise with access to SPACE, it looks like January 2 is going to be a good day to be a couch potato. ]]>

SPACE Blog – Doctor Who and the Mystery of the Crappy Villains

<![CDATA[rose_scribbleIf there’s one thing at which the Doctor excels, it’s taking the ordinary and domestic and turning it on its ear. Whether it’s household appliances going murderously haywire or something as simple as water in the upcoming The Waters of Mars special, the show has a knack for making simple concepts compelling and terrifying.

When the shows strays from this path, however, disaster is often the result. Modern visual effects have covered some mistakes with gloss and polish, but even powerful supercomputers and amazing physical effects can’t get in the way of a really dumb idea. Some monsters and threats are not just baddies, they’re BAD.

It was previously announced that the David Tennant gap year specials would all be released in the form of a box set on February 2, 2010, as well as separately. Well, now we have the details for the DVD and Blu-ray release of The Waters of Mars, available for $14.98 (DVD, SRP) and $19.89 (Blu-ray, SRP). You can view the DVD artwork (left), and the Blu-ray artwork (right) above.

Also revealed were some of the details for the box set (although not the cover art, as this is being kept literally under wraps for now). From the official Warner Bros. release:

This stunning collection of Doctor Who specials – The Next Doctor, Planet of the Dead, The Waters of Mars and The End of Time, Part One & Two – is a must own for all Doctor Who fans. The four imaginative, action-packed specials are the farewell to star David Tennant, and Russell T Davies, the mastermind behind the rebirth of the modern Doctor Who. The specials culminate in the dramatic regeneration of the Doctor, giving fans their first glimpse of the eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith. The specials are packed with a terrific lineup of guest stars including Michelle Ryan (Bionic Woman), David Morrissey (State of Play, Sense and Sensibility), Lindsay Duncan (Alice in Wonderland [2010], Rome, Under the Tuscan Sun) and many more that we can’t reveal just yet!

The 5-Disc box set will retail at $49.98 (DVD, SRP) and $59.99 (Blu-ray, SRP). Click here to read the full story from TVShowsOnDVD.com.
