The Three Who Rule enjoy another slow news week with excess meanderings, needlessly extending the length of this week’s instalment… however a slow news week coupled with a Classic Series commentary is a good thing. The lads turn their gaze to talking over the *cough* David Agnew *cough* masterpiece City of Death, heralded by Doctor Who fans as one of the best stories of our beloved show. Or at least as the highlight of Season 17. Ribald jokes and insightful analyses are paired like a meal with a fine French wine as we wander the streets of Paris.

After a couple of quiet weeks on the news front, we were treated to a bumper crop of topics worthy of discussion on this episode of Radio Free Skaro. Not only were we introduced to the next companion in the form of Jenna-Louise Coleman, but the official Doctor Who Convention in Cardiff gave us a new trailer for Series 7 and so much more, as told to us by our new friend Phil Cannon from the Who’s He Podcast who attended the convention and had a grand time. And as if that wasn’t enough, we present an interview with Graeme Burk and Robert Smith? about their new book Who Is The Doctor?, and top off the episode with a look at the works of Terrance Dicks in the Miniscope. Jenna-Louise Coleman Is The New Companion

It was about three months ago that Steven Moffat mentioned Amy and Rory’s time in the TARDIS was drawing to a close, and that Doctor Who would get a new companion in Series 7 to replace them. He remained coy as to who it might be or when the announcement would come (and in time rumours flew fast and furious about the return of Sophia Myles, who previously played Reinette in The Girl In The Fireplace, to the Who fold as the new companion), but yesterday the BBC finally teased the imminent announcement of some details.

This morning, via press release and on twitter, the months of waiting came to an end and the announcement was made.

So who’s the new companion for Matt Smith’s Doctor? Well, it’s none other than Jenna-Louise Coleman. Coleman is known for Emmerdale, so of course those of us on this side of the Atlantic have never heard of her. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course. Brits interested in checking out her work can do so in the four-part programme Titanic, which begins this coming Sunday on ITV1. Additionally, the Radio Times has published an article regarding Coleman’s career to date.

Update: The BBC has posted an interview by Lizo Mzimba with Coleman.

Details haven’t yet been released about the character’s name or story, but Lizo Mzimba has tweeted her first appearance will be in the Christmas episode. The official Doctor Who account later confirmed this, also noting there will be 6 episodes broadcast in 2012, including the Christmas special, and 8 episodes broadcast in 2013. The Ponds, however, won’t make it past episode 5, with the BBC noting their exit will be in a story featuring the Weeping Angels.

Introductions of companions to the media and fans has long been a big deal and the BBC kept up that tradition with this announcement, of course timing it just before the big Official Doctor Who Convention in Cardiff this coming weekend. Coincidence? We think not.

The Three Who Rule are slightly in tatters this week with Warren away in the Deep South and Chris fighting a cold that would easily fell the entire population of a space ark that left Earth in the 57th Segment of Time, Monoids included! Fortunately, all is quiet on the news front again this week as the world of Doctor Who is focused internally on actually making new episodes for broadcast in the fall. As a result, we turn to the past again as Steven, Warren, and Chris commentate over the final three episodes of the 1971 serial The Mind of Evil, featuring The Master, rockets, epic gun battles, and some delectable soup.

June 2012 North America Doctor Who DVD Releases

For the first time in a long time, we’ve got some upcoming North American Doctor Who DVD releases not featuring a title that’s been recently released in the UK.

June 12 will see the release of the special editions (née Revisitations) of the Patrick Troughton/Ice Warriors story The Seeds of Death along with Peter Davison’s lone battle against the Daleks, Resurrection of the Daleks.

Full special features have yet to be announced by Warner, though it’s safe to assume the North American releases will offer the same bonuses as folks got in the UK. With these releases, North America is finally caught up to the UK as far as Revisitations titles are concerned, with one exception – there’s still neither hide nor hair of the special edition of Spearhead From Space on this side of the Atlantic. Is it an issue with the Fleetwood Mac song? Who knows…

Also, as previously announced on Radio Free Skaro, June 12 will see the North American release of Series Five of The Sarah Jane Adventures, an offering which will indeed include the lone bonus item Goodbye Bannerman Road, Chris Chapman’s wonderful look at the series and the passing of its lead actress and star, Lis Sladen.

The Doctor Who releases will each be 2-disc sets and carry an MSRP of $34.98. Series Five of The Sarah Jane Adventures is a single disc release with an MSRP of $19.98. More details about these Doctor Who and Sarah Jane Adventures releases can be found at TVShowsOnDVD.com.

After five and a half years of middling Doctor Who talk and wildly inaccurate discussion about the programme and those who create it, The Three Who Rule reach the amazing milestone of their 300th episode of Radio Free Skaro. It’s been an epic ride from virtual obscurity for our first two years of existence to where we are today, and what better way to celebrate this event than the return of the Miniscope! In this instalment, we discuss the work of minor director Nicholas Mallett, whose Doctor Who output ranged from the very worst (“Paradise Towers”) to the very best (“The Curse of Fenric”), and everything in between (“The Mysterious Planet”). Given Warren’s rampant distaste for the Sylvester McCoy era, surely this will be a painful experience for him…or will it? This is the type of intrigue that has kept this show going for 300 episodes, and will push it into the future for at least a couple more.
