Steven, one mighty pillar of the tripod that is the Three Who Rule, doesn’t often succumb to the base emotions. Indeed, compared to the gutter-dwelling antics of Pedantor and the frankly borderline illegal conduct of Warren, Steven’s unflappable facade is nigh-invulnerable. But when the fate of Pete Tyler in “Father’s Day” comes into play, all propriety goes out the window. Tune in and hear his descent into madness…if you dare.
Warren here….one of my jobs is reporting on technology for Techvibes.com and for the past week I’ve been blogging from Nextmedia and the Banff Television Festival. One of the best parts of my job is interviewing tech and entertainment luminaries, and yesterday I got to talk to Ron Moore, the creator and head writer of Battlestar Galactica and the upcoming Caprica. Kris Krug, a Vancouver photographer and noted new media guy, also threw in a couple of questions. Anyway, Techvibes has graciously let me release the video the Radio Free Skaro audience as a Wednesday Thursday Cutaway, so it’d be great if you could return the favour by checking out their site. Enjoy, everybody!
As you read this, our friend Neil Perryman is either on a plane to Africa, in Africa preparing for his climb of Mount Kilimanjaro, or at the very top of the mountain itself, admiring the view and his accomplishment whilst breathing deeply into a respirator.
We only met Neil for the first time in February at Gallifrey 20 in Los Angeles, but we here at Radio Free Skaro immediately hit if off with him, along with the rest of the Tachyon TV entourage. When we heard that Neil was joining an expedition to climb Kilimanjaro for charity, we knew that we had to do our best to help, so we implored you, our dear listeners, to come forward and give what you could towards this noble cause.
And you all came through in spades. Neil’s target of raising £3,000 was shattered by almost £1,000 thanks to numerous generous donations. Well over £400 (a very conservative estimate indeed) was donated by Radio Free Skaro listeners, or, at least by people who were kind enough to mentions us when they donated.
Thank you, everyone, not only for all your kind donations to UNICEF, but for listening to us prattle on week after week about Neil’s worthy trek. Most of you have never even met any of us, or Neil, yet you still freely gave what money you could. We really appreciate what you have contributed to the cause, and we know that Neil is very humbled and pleased, as well.
Thanks again, and please note that donations can still be given to Neil’s cause until January 2010 by visiting the Just Giving website.
Katrina was back in the fold again this week (replacing Warren, who’s busy blogging in Banff this week), with the main focus of the Three Who Rule being to provide comments on Series 1 episode “The Long Game”. The trio never once went more than ten minutes without discussing the episode at hand – a new record? Along the way, various bits of news were covered, including the explosion of fandom (aka the closing of Doctor Who Forum at Outpost Gallifrey), the shrapnel of which, it was determined, landed well short of affecting your intrepid hosts.
Those of you in the Toronto area should circle Saturday, June 13 on your calendar, and those of you who aren’t in Toronto will want to be on that date, as well. On that day, Who Party 14 will be taking place, a one day Doctor Who convention taking place at the Best Western Primrose Hotel in downtown Toronto. Featuring such notable guests as Rob Shearman, Toby Hadoke, Colin Teague, and Lance Parkin, this is shaping up to be one of the biggest conventions that our fair country of Canada has seen in some time. Who Party is being put on by the Doctor Who Information Network, the longest running Doctor Who fan club in North America.
UPDATE! (June 5) James Strong, director of several Doctor Who episodes including The Satan Pit, The Impossible Planet, and Planet of the Dead, has been added to the bill!
Also, for a teaser as to what to expect from Messrs Hadoke and Shearman, you can check out what these fine fellows had to say to us when we interviewed them at Gallifrey ’09 :
Radio Free Skaro #123 – Shearman After Dark (Interview with Rob Shearman with Jason Haigh-Ellery)
More news than you can shake a stick at and a highlight of the Eccleston era (Rob Shearman’s “Dalek”) being commented upon, the Three Who Rule blather on for an hour and a half about the happenings in the Who world for the past week (including a discussion on new companion Karen Gillan), and touch on the introduction of a Classic Series icon to NuWho. All this and the latest on Ian Levine and Lizo Mzimba at your fingertips on Radio Free Skaro!
According to Variety Magazine, Doctor Who will moving from the SciFi Network (soon to be called SyFy, to rhyme with “iffy”) to BBC America, starting with the gap year specials. The 2008 Christmas special “The Next Doctor”, which aired in Canada on SPACE in March 2009, will finally get its US premiere on BBC America on Saturday, June 27, at 9:00 PM. The remaining four specials have yet to be scheduled, but they, along with Series 5, looks like they have found a home.
This is also interesting news, given the Podcast 8 (for lack of an actual name) focusing much attention on the plight of US broadcasting Doctor Who earlier this month. Anyway, here’s the link to the Variety story.
In a desperate bid to find someone who could give an unequivocal thumbs up to Series 1 tome “World War Three”, the RFS gang numbered four (Warren, Steven, Chris, and Katrina) for one of the few times in history to record a commentary for the episode. The result? No thumbs up were given, but neither were there definite thumbs down, mostly because the hosts were more encumbered in dealing with various innuendos, intended or otherwise.
With the regular hosts of Radio Free Skaro jumping ship left and right in order to avoid commentating on perceived Series One low point “Aliens of London”, it was left to Steven, Katrina, and, at the last minute, Chris to try and find something worthy to talk about for the Slitheens’ debut appearance in Doctor Who lore. They succeeded in not going too terribly off topic, although the intrusion of the subtitle track from the 1964 classic series story “Marco Polo” didn’t help. Have a listen for yourselves!

As most of you know, to be a Doctor Who fan in the UK right now is to be on top of the world. The show is a ratings hit, and everywhere you look, you are surrounded by Doctor Who hype unlike any seen in the programme’s long history.
For Doctor Who‘s worldwide fan base, though, things are not as cheery. Each series of Doctor Who is often broadcast months after it is shown in the UK, or, in the case of the past two gap year specials, The Next Doctor and Planet of the Dead, they might not have even been shown on TV in your area at all. As a result, fans from outside the UK have to resort to alternate means to view new episodes of the show. This means that the fans most likely will not watch the episodes when they finally arrive on their local TV station, which diminishes the viewership ratings, which lends the TV stations to believe that the show is unpopular, which leads them to further scale back their broadcasting plans of the show, and so on.
The fine fellows from DWO Whocast, Thie Week in Doctor Who, and Two-Minute Time Lord have pulled together a few of the Doctor Who world’s finest Doctor Who podcasts (they even invited us!) to raise awareness of what Doctor Who fans in all parts of the world are having to go through to follow their favourite TV show, and to offer ideas of what can be done to remedy the situation.
This project has manifested itself as an unprecedented two-part version of the DWO Whocast. Part One (Whocast #118) is being released today, and involves Trev and Marty (The Whocast), Ben Elliott (This Week in Doctor Who), and Chip (Two-Minute Time Lord) discussing the issues as noted above.
