Radio Free Skaro #179 – Click here to listen

The news of a Doctor Who movie sent The Three Who Rule so far past the point of bile they circled back around to apathy, but not without taking a few hostages along the way. In a slow news week to end all slow news weeks, digression and hatred were employed like plow horses in an effort to simply fill time. Steven points the gun of spite squarely in a new direction, Warren wastes no time in slagging off other Sci Fi TV shows and Chris even sings a few bars… it’s just that kind of episode.

<![CDATA[DoctorWho_DreamlandAlong with the previously-announced releases on May 4, it has now been announced that Dreamland, the recent animated episode written by Phil Ford, will see a release on the same day in a 2-disc set. As has previously been noted on Radio Free Skaro, the bulk of the bonus features are the Greatest Moments montage specials transmitted last year in the UK, however a commentary will be included.

rfs178In a move that could be precipitated only by Slownewsweekor, the Three Who Rule relied upon Torchwood discussion to fuel the latest Radio Free Skaro episode. The news of Torchwood maybe coming to America hit like a ton of bricks and startled much of the Doctor Who world, causing panic and looting; there may or may not have been talk of small children getting crushed underfoot as a result.

May North American DVD Releases

DrWho_CurseOfPeladonDrWho_MonsterOfPeladonDrWho_MasqueOfMandragora

May 4 will see the North American release of both Peladon stories from the Jon Pertwee era, The Curse of Peladon and The Monster of Peladon, as well as the 1976 Tom Baker story The Masque of Mandragora. What’s interesting to note is that the Peladon stories will only be sold separately, as opposed to the box set that came out this month in the UK.

FOX to Produce a US Version of Torchwood

<![CDATA[jack_usaThe Hollywood Reporter is reporting that FOX is developing a new version of Torchwood for air in the US, written by Russell T Davies and produced by Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter at BBC Worldwide. Read the full story here, and here for Den of Geek’s (whose charming picture we’ve borrowed for this article) take on affairs.

This can’t be seen as too much of surprise, given how many of the key cogs behind Torchwood’s creation, namely Davies, Gardner, and Tranter, are all working in the US now. The new series will probably star John Barrowman as Captain Jack, and, given how many story threads of the Cardiff-based Torchwood team were closed in the thrilling “Children of Earth”, it gives this new Torchwood a blank slate to work off of. The question is, will prudish, mainstream American TV be ready for the pansexual Captain Jack? This is also a man who killed his own grandchild to save mankind in a scene that would have never passed the censors at FOX.

We at Radio Free Skaro find this development interesting, to say the least (and one of our number, Steven, was one of many people who hypothesized that a future Torchwood series might be set in the US). Stay tuned!]]>

SPACE Blog Post – Why Matt Smith as The Doctor is a Very Good Thing

<![CDATA[spacebadgeSo who is this Matt Smith guy, anyway? It’s a fair question. Fandom let out a resounding “huh?” when the new Doctor was announced a little over a year ago. Not only did the then-26 year old Smith go against incoming Doctor Who producer Steven Moffat’s oft-quoted claim that he was looking for an older actor to take on he role, but Smith himself was something of an unknown quantity.

rfs177The retrospectives continue on Radio Free Skaro with The Three Who Rule again joined by TachyonTV’s Neil Perryman… though this week the world got flipped, turned upside down as the unthinkable happened: An episode dedicated to praising the work of Russell T Davies! Curmudgeor was not best pleased at the prospect and had to be subdued, but in the end the lads had a bit of a love-in for our favourite (read: only) NuWho show runner. Come share the warm fuzzies!

Radio Free Skaro #176 – Click here to listen

rfs176One mini-break in the wilderness is over for Doctor Who and it’s time to look at the gap year that was as we head into the next wilderness mini-break, awaiting Matt Smith’s first series. To aid in the retrospective the Three Who Rule dragged Tachyon TV’s own Neil Perryman kicking and screaming into the (virtual) recording booth, Vinvocci style. More bile was flung about than a monkey can fling poop, though kudos were given where appropriate… but do we ever want to see a gap year again?
