BBC America has announced that classic Doctor Who DVD releases, beginning with Meglos in 2011, will be synchronized across all major regions. Whereas in the past months would pass between a UK and North American or Australian/New Zealand release, releases will now come in the same week beginning next year. This will certainly make DVD buyers outside the UK very happy, including those of us at Radio Free Skaro who have, at times, pined for releases available in the UK but not yet available in North America. We very much welcome the change, even if the accelerated Region 1 release schedule means 2011 will be a pricey year for DVDs.]]>

Congratulations to Russell T Davies and friend of the show Phil Ford on their Best Dramatic Presentation – Short Form Hugo award for The Waters of Mars, presented earlier today at Aussiecon 4 in Melbourne. This Hugo is the fourth win for Doctor Who since its revamp in 2005 and the first for any writer other than Steven Moffat. The Waters of Mars was, at least for the Radio Free Skaro gang, the high point of the 2009 Gap Year and we couldn’t be happier it was recognized for its brilliance.]]>
The Classic Series Commentary series has ended… only to be replaced by the Series 5 Commentary series. (Any more attempts to use the word “series” will likely cause another crack in time, so we’d best stop there.) We’ve given the news segment a bit of time off… something that breaks our fictitious award-loving hearts, but on the upside it means no stats! So sit back, relax and have a listen to The Three Who Rule talk about the glorious opener to Matt Smith’s tenure! |

Doctor Who head writer Steven Moffat has announced that the next series of Doctor Who would be split into two halves, with a “game-changing cliffhanger” separating the two. Speaking at the Media Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival, Moffat said that seven episodes would start airing near Easter, with the following six episodes airing in the Autumn.

According to the CV of new Doctor Who production designer Michael Pickwoad, Adam Smith and Richard Clark will be returning to the director’s chair for Series 6 of Doctor Who, set to begin filming shortly.
Adam Smith, in our minds, was the directorial star of Matt Smith’s first series as The Doctor, successfully bringing The Eleventh Hour, The Time of Angels, and Flesh and Stone to the screen with great flair and panache. It would appear that Smith will be in charge of one of the first two blocks of filming, which apparently includes shooting on Neil Gaiman’s episode. Richard Clark returns to Doctor Who for the first time since helming two Series 3 episodes, Gridlock and The Lazarus Experiment. Both directors join a top notch team which includes Toby Haynes, who is in charge of the upcoming 2010 Christmas Special and who previously directed The Pandorica Opens and The Big Bang from Series 5. Here’s links to both Adam Smith’s and Richard Clark’s profiles on IMDB: |

| As heard in an exclusive interview on the Hoo On Who podcast, 2Entertain Commissioning Editor Dan Hall announced that the 1996 FOX Doctor Who TV Movie will be released in North America before the end of 2011. The long and convoluted history regarding broadcast and distribution rights between the various production companies responsible for the movie have kept it off of North American VHS and DVD shelves since its original broadcast 14 years, so this is welcome, and overdue, news.
Good job, David and Marty at Hoo On Who, for bringing us the announcement! You can visit the Hoo On Who website here, or click to listen to the exclusive announcement in the media player above. |
