July 2011 North America Doctor Who DVD Releases

| July 5 (as reported by BBC America; July 12 seems the more likely date as announced by Warner) will feature the last as-yet-unreleased-on-DVD Peter Davison story, The Awakening, hitting store shelves. Bonus features include a commentary, a behind-the-scenes documentary, a “Now and Then” piece, and the rest of the usual fare (PDF Radio Times listings and so on) as well as deleted scenes featuring Kamelion who was initially meant to appear in the story.
UPDATE: The William Hartnell serial The Gunfighters has now been added as the second July DVD release from 2 Entertain, streeting on the same date. A few bonus items are included such as a commentary and “Tomorrow’s Times” piece, but the main documentary on this disc is “The End of the Line”, which promises to be a very interesting piece on the John Wiles era. Gallifrey One: Network 23 – The Countdown Begins

The first details for Gallifrey One’s Network 23, the 2012 edition of the world’s preeminent Doctor Who convention, have been announced on the convention’s official website, www.gallifreyone.com.
Running from February 17-19, 2012, some of the cast of the 1996 Fox Doctor Who TV movie will be present at Gally, including Paul McGann and Yee Jee Tso. Joining them will be Jake McGann, Louise Jameson (Leela), William Russell (Ian Chesterton), Richard Franklin (Mike Yates), and Mary Tamm (Romana I). Also booked for the convention are mainstays Tony Lee, Gary Russell, Jason Haigh-Ellery and friend of the show, Phil Ford.
Radio Free Skaro will again have Gallifrey One covered in 2012 with daily podcasts from the convention, as well as news and updates here on RadioFreeSkaro.com.
In the mean time, preregistration is open at $60, and the convention is dedicated to the memory of Nicholas Courtney.

Radio Free Skaro #246 – Phantom Of The Optera
< After an almost three month wait, there was some new Doctor Who content to discuss in the form of two short scenes written for the BBC’s Red Nose Day coverage. As well, news hit the wire we’ll be getting a little extra Who in the form of prequel mini-episodes for a few Series 6 stories. Such an occasion always attracts guests, and so Luke from TMDWP drops in to share his two cents, while also ably aiding the Three Who Rule in slicing, dicing and dissecting the Doctor Who career of director Richard Martin. The BBC has today announced that prequel snippets will be released ahead of three Series 6 episodes. Presumably similar to the Series 5 DVD linking scenes, we’ll have a short look at what happens between episodes and what will kick off the action.

Doctor Who Series Six: First Two Stories Titled

Today on twitter, BBC entertainment reporter Lizo Mzimba announced the titles of the first two Series 6 episodes as The Impossible Astronaut and Day of the Moon. Given we know the episodes are set in late 1960s America, one wonders if there might be a tie-in with a certain space-related event near the tail end of that decade…
In addition, Doctor Who Magazine tweeted that the titles for the following five episodes would be released in issue 433, due in early April.

Instead of the subject being chosen randomly, musician Peter Howell’s work was specifically chosen for discussion, and instead of a discussion, why not interview the man himself? So, in tandem with Dr. Phillip Serna of Adventures in Time, Space, and Music, Steven got to talk to one of his early musical heroes about his many varied scores for Doctor Who from 1980-1985. Doctor Who Series 6 Begins April 23!

| It’s always a guessing game about the start date for any new series of Doctor Who – and boy can it be fun. Nevertheless, having solid information about the start date is even better, allowing the appetite to really be whet in anticipation. Easter has long been rumoured as the beginning of Series 6, just as Easter has been the start time for so many prior series, however it now looks an even more likely, solid date.
BBC America apparently confirmed the date according an article from Entertainment Weekly before formally confirming it via Twitter and their Anglophenia blog. While the Mothership has yet to formally comment, apparently that same date is noted in Doctor Who Magazine #432. None of this can be taken as a formal announcement by the BBC until those shiny press releases start flying about, but between the BBC America announcement and history it’s pretty evident it will be Saturday, April 23 across the pond. Roll on the announcement from the BBC, the announcement from SPACE, and most importantly… roll on Easter! Here are the provided details about the series premiere: “Doctor Who is coming to America in a spectacular two-part season premiere on BBC AMERICA. Part One premieres Saturday, April 23 at 9/8c. The mysterious time traveler, the Doctor (Matt Smith), and his companions Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill), find themselves on a secret summons that takes them on an adventure from the desert in Utah – right to the Oval Office in1969. More details will be revealed in the coming weeks about this two-parter penned by ‘Who supremo’ Steven Moffat (Sherlock) and featuring guest star Mark Sheppard (Supernatural, Battlestar Galactica). Also set to return this season, Alex Kingston (ER, Flash Forward), as the irrepressible River Song.” |
