Doctor Who Taking It Easy in 2012

<![CDATA[Over the past week or so there’s been a bit of an uproar about reports of a reduced run for Doctor Who in 2012. Nobody was saying exactly what was going on, and we still don’t know all the details, but this evening Lizo Mzimba has tweeted the BBC is confirming Doctor Who won’t get its regular-length run next year; that is to say we won’t have 14 episodes broadcast in 2012. Sam Hodges, head of communications for BBC One, reiterated the show has had 14 episodes commissioned but also restated no time frame had been given for the broadcast of those episodes, as discussed previously on Radio Free Skaro. The news originally broke today from a speech by Danny Cohen, BBC 1 Controller, at a Church and Media conference. Cohen’s speech has since been released online, and the relevant portion regarding Doctor Who can be found here.

Mzimba followed up to say it was likely this 14-episode commission would be split across 2012 and 2013; Moffat later noted the shift in Doctor Who scheduling isn’t being influenced or affected by Sherlock despite Cohen’s statements.

More details will follow as they become known, and of course we’ll be discussing this on the next episode of Radio Free Skaro.]]>

  1. @eliza The olympics are in 2012. DW can’t broadcast during that.

  2. There seems to have been quite a panic about all this (well, there’s always a panic, about everything) across the Internets, but wouldn’t it just be that they’ll start the next series in the fall with a break and a special over x-mas and pick it up again in the spring of 2013 followed by the next series in fall of 2013, probably with a huge anniversary special stuck in there for good measure? So there will technically be less Who in 2012 but the wait will be no worse really than during the RTD years, just shifted to a different part of the year.

They’re just completing the move to a fall schedule and avoiding competing with the Olympics (and summer in general) as a wonderful bonus. Maybe I’m being too optimistic.
