It’s finally time for us to face up to the fact that the Eurovision in Space episode is here. So what did the Three Who Rule think of the glitz, glitter, and glamour of The Interstellar Song Contest? You may be surprised at the results! Join us as we muse over surprising cameos, the return of an iconic villain, and our descent into cynicism as we speculate on RTD’s current approach, the remaining two episodes and what lies in wait for Doctor Who generally. 1. You’ll always be my favourite podcast/podcasters, and have been since waaaaay back, and I’d never want inauthentically positive reactions from you guys if you’re not feeling it. But the ‘so many plot holes’ comment (especially when you were saying you *don’t* want things overexplained) really is so unearned. Pretty much everything needed to tie it all up in a bow is concisely covered, implied, or shown. For instance… the fire’s aren’t ‘still burning’… it was showing (beautifully, profoundly sadly) two phases of a deliberately Earth-like planet’s past that had brought the Hellians to this point. It’s part memory, part objectively how the devastation would be seen from orbit. Powerful. For me, it was a 10/10 ep, I’m really vibing with this era and as frustrating as it is to hear you on such a protracted downer these last two years, it’s good – vital!- to have counter-points, have my own assessment robustly challenged etc. But yeah, I felt compelled to type about the wrongly identified ‘holes’ that aren’t, as that’s one of my personal pet peeves. Still love you… and I know the positive vibes will return next time you get to deep-dive into miniscope/missing eps/etc. territory etc. I look forward to all of that, and thanks – as ever- for being there, week in week out, through all of life’s ups and downs. You’ll never know how much that’s helped, and there will be many other listeners who could say the same. Take care.

  2. (Second attempt) I had a completely different reading of the torture scene. Despite the Doctor saying it is because of the potential death of 3 trillion people, it really was because of the death of one person – Belinda. At the time he thought he had failed another companion and Belinda was a popsicle in space.

So, it was with great relief and surprise when she walked into the room.

  3. dunno, I love listening to you guys discussing Doctor Who but each week of this season, I’ve liked every episode ( and loved quite a bit) only to have you rip it to shreds and I come away disliking the episode. So, I feel I shouldn’t listen to you as you are spoiling it for me. Like below , I don’t want you to pretend, but it does feel like you go out of your way to find the bad parts and ignore the good parts.

This week seemed like a powerful message about colonialism, terrorism and seemed particularly relevant to the real world Eurovision, delivered in the modern way. My only criticism and this stands for all the episodes, it needed 5 more minutes to fill out the plot gaps (like Belinda and the Doctor having more time to discuss Doctor going into TLV mode) – I don’t know why in the streaming era we have set 45 minutes instead of variable run times.

I do know RTD has his faults but generally I’ve liked the 2 Disney seasons and if I half closed my eyes, I liked the ending of last season. I’ve got my fingers crossed for this one.

  4. Just finished watching the last episode of The Sandbaggers last night. Thanks for pushing it so much. One set jumped off the shelf at my local library saying “Radio Free Skaro recommended” and then after watching all 3 sets my library system had available, I finished it on Amazon Prime. Just a very well done series.
