Two years since Torchwood was last seen on the TV and computer screens in the brilliant “Children of Earth”, the series returned this past weekend on Starz and SPACE (and, soon, BBC One) with the first installment of the ten-part epic “Miracle Day”. And what an assured debut it was, too, with plenty of action and intrigue to go around with some whimsical japes thrown in for good measure. In addition to this, we have the first of our Summer Classic Commentary series (an event so noteworthy that we’ve chosen to capitalize the name) as we watch and talk over the first three parts of the 1972 serial “The Sea Devils”. Radio Free Skaro: as much fun as one could have in a string vest.

It’s Miracle Day! No, not that Torchwood series due to begin soon… the miracle is the fact The Three Who Rule are actually excited to watch Torchwood! To celebrate what we derisively once dubbed Torchwood: USA, the Radio Free Skaro lads invite Chris Sigma from The Ood Cast, who was fortunate enough to attend the London premiere of Miracle Day, to join the fun and present a spoiler-free look at what to expect from this new series. And the best part of all is you, dear listener, are not subjected to songs or sketches from the likes of Warren, Steven or Chris.

Torchwood: Miracle Day UK Broadcast Date

<![CDATA[Website Den of Geek is reporting that Torchwood: Miracle Day will begin its UK run on Thursday, July 14. The New World will go out at 9:00PM that day on BBC One, kicking off the new series in the UK, albeit 6 days behind the US broadcast on Starz and 5 days behind the Canadian broadcast on SPACE.

The BBC Press Office has yet to make any public statement regarding the UK launch of the series, though they have sent a release to news outlets explicitly stating the time & date of transmission.

Needless to say there has often been the ethical question relating to “other means” acquisitions of Doctor Who by those outside the UK before day and date transmissions became a reality; it will be interesting to see if any reports are published about such actions by UK residents looking to avoid the 6-day delay for Torchwood: Miracle Day. Given Doctor Who Magazine has also reported there will be at least minor differences between the US and UK versions, there may be another reason for folks in the UK to seek out those “other means” when it comes to Torchwood: Miracle Day, just as there may be for those outside the UK curious to see the UK versions of the episodes.

Doctor Who Taking It Easy in 2012

<![CDATA[Over the past week or so there’s been a bit of an uproar about reports of a reduced run for Doctor Who in 2012. Nobody was saying exactly what was going on, and we still don’t know all the details, but this evening Lizo Mzimba has tweeted the BBC is confirming Doctor Who won’t get its regular-length run next year; that is to say we won’t have 14 episodes broadcast in 2012. Sam Hodges, head of communications for BBC One, reiterated the show has had 14 episodes commissioned but also restated no time frame had been given for the broadcast of those episodes, as discussed previously on Radio Free Skaro. The news originally broke today from a speech by Danny Cohen, BBC 1 Controller, at a Church and Media conference. Cohen’s speech has since been released online, and the relevant portion regarding Doctor Who can be found here.

Mzimba followed up to say it was likely this 14-episode commission would be split across 2012 and 2013; Moffat later noted the shift in Doctor Who scheduling isn’t being influenced or affected by Sherlock despite Cohen’s statements.

More details will follow as they become known, and of course we’ll be discussing this on the next episode of Radio Free Skaro.]]>
